I love the photos app on my iPhone. I’ve marked favorites, created shared albums for family, and made personal albums of my deceased husband and each grandchild. I’ve also got albums of remodels, recipes, my childhood, and vacations. I like your caption idea and will definitely add that. I also take screenshots of old family photos and then change the dates to approximate the year they were taken. Obviously, being retired helps, but it’s a rewarding endeavor.
I’ve been tackling the mess by inputting today’s date (just the month and day, not the year) into the photo apps search box and doing just one date’s photos through the years each day. Usually there are 10-30; if we were on a vacation or at a special event, maybe a 100. It takes very little time and in a year I’ll be done! Feels manageable
My problem is I have both Google Photos and iPhone Photos, with duplicates on both. This goes back off and on to around 2007 since I switched back and forth between Samsung phones and iPhones.

It’s terrific, isn’t it?
I’ve heard I can also actually talk to people on it, but that might just be a rumor 😉
🤔🤞🏼
Ha ha, right, I call it my camera most of the time, not my phone!
Really! Somebody reminded me recently that I can actually talk to people on my camera - will wonders never cease!
Very helpful suggestions
Thanks so much!
I seriously need to do this. I don’t like iCloud, so I will see if I can hook up Google Photo on my iPhone.

There you go! Doesn’t have to be done at once.

Once your phones photos are copied to Google Photos, you should be able to delete them from your phone if you want to.
This is so fabulous! I feel like you’ve been looking over my shoulder! Thank you for these tips! I can’t wait to declutter my photos!!
You’re very welcome - glad TheSeniorTechie can help!
Never thought about this. Thank you!
I think I have both but don't need both. How do I disable one of them?
Did you mean Google and iCloud? You don’t have to disable them, just stop auto uploading:
Stopping Google Photos Auto-Upload
On Android or iPhone:
1. Open the Google Photos app
2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner
3. Tap “Photos settings” (Android) or “Google Photos settings” (iPhone)
4. Tap “Backup”
5. Toggle Backup off
On a Windows PC:
1. Click the Google Drive/Backup and Sync icon in the system tray
2. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) and select “Pause” to temporarily stop uploads, or “Quit” to stop entirely
On a Mac:
1. Click the Backup and Sync icon in the menu bar
2. Click the three-dot menu and select “Quit Backup and Sync”
Stopping iCloud Photo Auto-Upload
On iPhone/iPad:
1. Go to Settings
2. Tap your Apple ID name at the top
3. Tap iCloud
4. Tap Photos
5. Toggle “Sync this iPhone” (or “iCloud Photos”) off
On a Mac:
1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS)
2. Click your Apple ID
3. Click iCloud, then click Options next to Photos
4. Uncheck iCloud Photos
