Loved the post! I'm still working as a teacher, learning every day. Sometimes I fell like I'm slipping, but that could be because I'm working, learning how to market a book and writing another.
My doctor strongly encouraged me to study Spanish after I said I would like to be able to communicate better during our trips to Mexico. She said learning a foreign language is a great brain exercise.
When my husband passed away MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) were just becoming a thing.
I jumped in like it would save my life. I started with Coursera and Khan Academy. I was terrible at math in school but the Khan Academy structure was so good I found myself loving it and learning.
The Coursera courses I completed ranged from Astronomy taught by Mike Brown from Caltech who discovered a dwarf planet that led to the demotion of Pluto as a planet. Outstanding professor and really fun course.
I took a course on global warming from the University of British Columbia that was I want to say 18 weeks but it was extensive and took a deep dive into the science
One on Bach
One on JFK on the 50th anniversary of his death
One on dog cognition
One on The Beatles
There were about 15 I was able to complete and get a certificate for.
And my niece who went back to school to get accounting credentials used Khan for one particular topic she was struggling with.
I’ve also tried EdX and Udemy
This didn’t get me through it on its own but it soothed my brain and I can’t recommend highly enough.
Thx for this article. Hadn’t thought about it in awhile.
Just one more thing. I decided a couple of years ago I needed a brain challenge and decided to learn Russian with Duolingo. Let’s just say my brain wasn’t up for that challenge. I tried really hard but finally had to give up 🤓
I have to admit I’ve only taken a couple of online courses related to the technology of cryptocurrency, but they were well done. I’ve only ever heard extraordinarily good things about Khan, at least for math courses.
Thanks so much for sharing the detail of your journey!
I’m glad you enjoyed the article. It’s gotten a lot of traction - over 2,500 people have read it.
The benefits of learning are huge, particularly for retirees. Great article.
Thanks so much!

Good for you! And it has the added benefit of being useful!
Enjoy Mexico!
Thank you for these resources. I plan to retire within a year and I want to have something ready immediately to keep some structure in my days.
You're very welcome! Good luck with your retirement,
