I wear my phone at all times — on a strap — because I have had some serious falls. I upgraded my iPhone specially for the satellite feature (cell service is not reliable here). Be aware that it can take some time to connect to the satellite.
Holding the buttons down on each side of the phone is an extremely ableist design, btw.
I might be missing something but I have a Samsung Galaxy A35 and its set up/use is quite different from your description. The side button requires five (5) presses (not 3) to engage the Emergency SOS and then you need to go to the home screen and slide the SOS button to the right. (As an aside, there is no "trial"or "test" mode. Not that you said there would be one, but more to warn other users.) Most importantly, there is a red letter button that reads "Start SOS Message" (or words to that effect) which can suggest (as it did to me) that by clicking that button you're establishing the service... only you're not, you're initiating an emergency SOS call/text, etc... I scared the bejeesus out of two close friends. Be careful Samsung folks... go slow and don't be afraid to ask questions!
This is a good reminder for anyone teaching or playing pickleball with older adults, not just the general safety angle. My Apple Watch has triggered Emergency SOS a handful of times mid-match, must be picking up a hard stop or a stumble as a fall. I've always been able to cancel it in time, but it made me realize how sensitive that detection actually is and how fast it moves once triggered.
Worth checking now rather than the day it actually matters, exactly like you said. Setting up Medical ID takes five minutes and most people never bother until they need it.
